Avezzano is a city of 37.177 inhabitants located at 695m above sea
level, chief town of Marsica.
The history of Avezzano is related to the history of the ancient
lake Fucino.
It began with the construction of the lake's drainage, ordered by the Roman
Emperor Claudius (41-54 d.c.).
Up to this day, you can see the ruins of "Cunicoli
di Claudio" (Claudius's Tunnels).
A common belief of the origin of its name comes from "AVE JANE."
This name was written on the Temple dedicated to the Roman God Janus at
around the same time a community started to grow.

However, the most suitable version of its origin is "AD VETIANUM"
which means a "property assigned by the Roman government to the Vetia
family," ubicated in the ancient village of "Alba
Fucens."
And even today you can still visit the ruins of the Roman market center,
the thermal baths, the Macellum, the amphitheatre,
etc."
In the vicinity of "Alba Fucens" stands
the Twelveth Century's Benedectine Church of St.
Peter.
In 1490, Gentile Virgilio Orsini built a castle
on the outskirts of the town; later expanded and improved by Marco Antonio
Colonna in 1570.
After Prince Torlonia drained
the ancient Fucino Lake (also known as Celano
Lake) in 1875, there are only old paintings remained
as reminders of its remains.
In the morning of January 13 1915, the area of Fucino was shaken by a tremendous
hearthquake, which totally destroyed the town
of Avezzano and the surrounding small towns.
The only relic of the way the town used to look before the earthquake is
preserved in ancient postcards.
Today, Avezzano is an important agricultural and commercial center,
it ranks among as one of the most important industrial nucleus of Abruzzo.
This
city is within an hour's drive from the cities of Rome and Pescara, via
Toll-highways A24 and A25 and from Naples via
the highway "superstrada del Liri."
Surrounded by numerous mountain resources, in the vicinity of Abruzzo
National Park and the Velino Sirente Park and at foot of the enchanting
pine plantation of the "Madonna di Pietraquaria," Avezzano is
the most important reference and shopping center for tourists who converge
in Marsica all year round.
Worthy of visit are all the satellite centers of:
